What is graphics Design?
When you ask Google about this, it will tell you that it is the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, or books. So quite a simple and accurate explanation. However, I believe there is more to it than that.
I shall attempt to answer what Graphics Design is, give you my take on it from my experience. Well, let’s start by breaking it down. So, when it comes to graphic design, we have two words, graphic and design.
Graphic is visual representations of creativity, imagination, and expression that use a variety of techniques to provide clear and explicit detail, such as drawing, painting, engraving, or writing. Visual elements, building pieces, and design make up the graphic part of graphic design. The following basic visual elements are united to bring a graphic design to the core of our artistic expression: line, color, shape, additional space, form, and typography. We choose these visual elements and arrange them on a surface in a layout to convey a concept.
Design means to decide upon the look and function of something before it is made. So design is thinking, problem-solving, and practicality. In graphic design, there are certain principles to consider.
These principles are all interconnected and may be found in every well-designed piece of work you see. As a result, the design principles make the design in graphic design. A good grasp of design will imply that your work will always have substance.
The key principles of design are contrast:-
When we bring both the visual elements and the principles together, we have graphic design. it is not drawing, is not painting, neither is it creating a poster or a quick logo. These principles are the means to the end and skills in their own right. it is not about making things look pretty.
Graphic design is the organization and presentation of information developed through a creative process developed for a particular function, you must first understand information, message, or brief and then research. think, Imagine, develop and create a solution, a concept in order to communicate that information, tell a story, a message, or idea in a visual way. It’s only once we have a solid idea and development it through the design process. We can use our skills with layout, color, typography, and creative tools to bring the idea to life. Once upon a time that would have been just made with a pencil or paintbrush. Today it’s all those things and more. Today we also have cameras, computers, and printers, since the invention of the printing press which enabled reproduction on a mass scale. it has been used to communicate.
With the advancement of technology, We are surrounded by a plethora of visual communication today. Graphic design is used in a wide variety of print and digital media, including
- Web design,
- Interface design,
- Magazine layout,
- Paper engineering,
- TV motion graphics,
- Often installations
- Digital art.
What does a graphic designer do?
If you choose to pursue a career in graphic design, you’ll almost certainly end up working in one of those fields. it has affected culture over many decades through pop art, political art, and commercial art. Today, graphic design has a big commercial side. it has a strong commercial connotation and is frequently used to sell and market goods. But that’s not all it has to be. its power to inform, influence, and instruct on a commercial level can also be used to educate and inspire generations.
I believe graphic design is the unity of two opposing forces, artistic expression, and practical design theory. As a graphic designer, these two forces will always be at odds in your thoughts. However, if you can bring these two forces together in harmony, you will be successful. you can create great visual communication.
For any of you that were unsure of the definition. I hope that this has helped to explain. In this blog post, I mentioned that graphic design is made of two things, visual elements, and principles.
